When a new mum (or dad) calls us about a photo shoot for their newborn baby, we sometimes get asked the question “is newborn photography safe?”. Well the short answer is “with us, yes!”. But we thought we would put together a brief post to answer in more detail, and highlight a few things we think you should look out for when choosing your newborn photographer.
If there’s any concerns we haven’t covered in this post please contact us. We would love to chat with you and answer any questions you have.
Reputation is Important

In our opinion the first step to ensuring you have a safe newborn photography experience , is looking for a photographer with a good reputation. Asking people for recommendations is always the first tip. Once a friend or family member has gained trust in a photographer, it is much easier to do the same. A bad reputation is much harder to shake off, so tread carefully and look for up to date reviews and recommendations. Have a look at our testimonials to see what people are saying about us!
Experience is Essential
Of course experience is essential. Of course everyone has to start somewhere, but with a newborn shoot we would suggest looking at a Family, Baby or Newborn specialist. After all, a commercial photographer may have a fantastic reputation for his work, but may not be experienced in handling a newborn baby. It’s useful to know if the photographer has children of his or her own, giving them built in experience. Check out the About Us page for a little information about our family and story.
Training and Recognition is Preferred

Many photographers start out in Photography as a hobby and decide to offer shoots as a side line. Wedding photographers often refer to the inexperienced photographer as a ‘weekend warrior’ or ‘Uncle Bob’. These tend to be a relative who is an amateur photographer perhaps with an eye for photography, but no training or professional qualifications. Of course many ‘Uncle Bobs’ are incredible photographers, however they may not be trained in lighting, editing or health and safety for example. So training and recognition is always preferred but not essential. Proceed with caution when booking a weekend warrior.
A Good Location is Helpful

The newborn shoot is often your first trip out of the house so choosing a good studio location is helpful. For example, choose somewhere that has private parking. Also useful is a studio with good access for the pram, especially when you are still on learner plates! With us having a studio located on the grounds of a private stately home it means that your first trip with your new addition is a wonderful experience all round. No nasty industrial estate, no high street parking and no stairs to negotiate with wheels or a heavy car seat. During the open season at Renishaw Hall you can also round your day off beautifully with stroll in the gardens, or a relaxing lunch in Renishaw Hall Cafe.
Have they Got Insurance?
One of the questions you should ask your photographer is have they got insurance? As a professional photography studio we have public liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance. This covers for any accidents whilst in the care of the photography or in the studio.
