From Portaloo’s to Posh hair doo’s
So yet again it’s been a while since we’ve had chance to post on Chrysalis Photography’s website. We’ve been busy bees with the new website design, along with some exciting new services we’re offering soon as well. More about that another time.
But for now I thought it would be fun to show you the following two images that we created within just a few days of each other:
The first is what would be considered a ‘standard’ commercial product shot, used for brochures websites or other advertising material. Even though an image of this type appears very simple to create, it’s actually quite a difficult shot to do correctly, and requires a good understanding of lighting. The pure white background is essential to start with, and is all achieved in the studio with 4 separate lights. Yes, it’s possible to cut out the products in Photoshop, but that is extremely time-consuming. A cut-out can take anything from 10-40 minutes, depending on the complexity of the image. Multiply this time across a shoot like this, which had 87 images, and you total maybe 30 hours extra editing. Even then, if not done correctly the image will look cut-out.
Just a few days later we were asked to do a model shoot for a local hair salon, so they can enter a national hair competition. These shoots are a great opportunity for us to get really creative, so we always jump at the chance to get involved. As you can imagine, a shoot like this requires much more preparation than the commercial shot above. The theme needs to be agreed first, and then collaboration with the hair stylist, makeup artist and model is all essential to creating an image like this. As for the lighting, 4 separate lights used again for this image, though in very different ways. The twinkles and swooshes were of course added in post-processing (we’re not that clever to get all that ‘in-camera’!) just to really take the image to another level.Big thanks go to all the people involved with the making of this second image.
So in the space of a week we had to very different, but equally challenging studio sessions. If your business requires any product photography then do give us a call and we will be happy to help. Or perhaps your local salon would like to talk to us about future hair competition photography. It’s a great opportunity for them to also get creative, and if they win it’s also fantastic for their business.
We’ll let you know how we get on with this particular competition.
